MBRRACE 2023 Statement
On the 12th October 2023 the MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care report was published.
This is the ninth perinatal surveillance report of its kind. The report investigates the circumstances around the tragic maternal deaths that occurred between 2019 and 2021, during or within a year after pregnancy.

Our Head of Charity, Annie Belasco released this statement following the release of this report
“We are now at a point where it is clear that no real difference is being made to the number of maternal deaths occurring, particularly within minority groups, despite consistent evidence. The government need to take immediate action to ensure that the NHS have a supported and safe working environment, and all women and birthing people have comfort in knowing they are expecting a safe maternity experience. The leading cause of maternal death within the first year of maternity is STILL suicide, which is a wake up call for the urgent need for extended mental health provision.”
